Guangdong travel becomes routine for half of Hong Kong residents: Visa

Nearly half of Hong Kong residents have now made Guangdong travel part of their weekly or monthly routine, a recent Visa study has concluded.
The global digital payment service provider announced its findings on Wednesday, noting 44 per cent of respondents purchasing half of their daily essentials on the other side of the border.
The survey also found that a more seamless payment experience could further drive travel frequency – a notion with which 68 per cent of northbound travellers from the neighbouring special administrative region and 77 per cent of southbound travellers agreed.
Digital wallets are also a contributing factor when it comes to micro-escapades from Hong Kong.
67 per cent of northbound trip makers viewed them as the ideal payment method not only at home but also in Guangdong, significantly ahead of credit cards at 17 per cent, with 48 per cent of southbound holidaymakers seeing them as their priority method for most spending.
Micro-escapes drive new lifestyle
Travel to Guangdong, or the Greater Bay Area, is now a ‘frequent activity’ rather than an ‘occasional event’, stated VISA.
For southbound GBA travellers visiting Hong Kong, about 51 per cent of the trips surveyed lasted between one and three nights, with an additional 15 per cent travelling for same-day visits.
‘This shift is underpinned by substantial travel volumes, with 55% of respondents visiting Hong Kong at least once every one to three months,’ VISA stated.
‘This trend is mirrored in northbound travel from Hong Kong, where the GBA now forms part of the weekly or monthly routine for 49% of residents.’
In both directions, Gen Z travellers appeared to be on the move more than ever, resulting in the highest trip frequency with an average of 11 excursions annually – predominantly for same-day and short trips.
‘Hong Kong residents have a strong passion for travel, whether it’s longer holidays overseas or frequent trips within the Greater Bay Area,” said Paulina Leong, general manager of Visa Hong Kong and Macau.
‘As travel across the GBA becomes more frequent, there is a growing expectation that payments simply work, seamlessly, predictably, and consistently, wherever people go.’
