New multi-entry arrangement for Zhuhai residents a boon for local businesses – European chamber head
The newly announced multiple-entry policy, which will enable Zhuhai and Hengqin residents to visit Macau once a week, is expected to provide a much-needed boost to the city’s struggling retail and food and beverage sectors, the head of the Macau European Chamber of Commerce (MECC) said.
“This is a very welcome measure, and I believe it will boost business for retail shops and restaurants,” MECC president Rui Pedro Cunha told MNA.
The State Council announced on Friday that, starting 1 January 2025, Zhuhai residents will be able to apply for a visa allowing weekly visits to Macau, with each stay capped at seven days. Currently, they are only allowed to enter the Macau SAR once every two months after applying for a visa.
Mr Cunha highlighted that this policy paves the way for “a closer relationship between Macau and Hengqin,” describing it as “the right direction” for integration.
Zhuhai residents able to enter Macau once a week from Jan 1, 2025
Starting January 1, 2025, residents of Zhuhai can apply for a visa that allows them to enter Macau once a week, with each stay limited to a maximum of seven days.
Previously, Zhuhai residents were only allowed to enter the Macau SAR once every two months after applying for a visa. In comparison, residents from the rest of Guangdong Province could obtain entry visas once every three months.
The measure is one of many announced by central authorities in recent years to ease and improve transport and movement between the SARs and Guangdong province.
Authorities also announced that residents of the Guangdong-Macau Deep Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and holders of residency cards will be able to apply for the “one visa, multiple entries” visa, which allows unlimited travel to Macau over the course of a year, with stays also limited to a maximum of seven days.
Additionally, starting December 1, 2024, residents of Shenzhen and holders of residency cards will be able to apply for the “one visa, multiple entries” visa, permitting unlimited travel to Hong Kong, with each stay not exceeding seven days.
