North district suffers flat Golden Week sales despite spiked tourism overall: group leader

Business growth appeared to have flattened in Macau’s northern neighbourhood despite a citywide visitation spike, Wong Kin Chong, head of an industrial and commercial group, has said.

As reported by Macao Daily News, Wong has urged increased investment in an area whose economy is primarily supported by its residents.

The businessperson said that attractions that rely on intellectual property to draw footfall, such as the ongoing campaign featuring Japanese cartoons, had failed to create long-lasting momentum.

“On the one hand, the northern district lacks tourism resources and developed consumer pathways amidst a shortage of commercial infrastructure, making it hard to keep visitors who usually come and go without staying,” he pointed out.

He also blamed inefficient transport for low visitation, saying casino-bound shuttles “further weaken the visibility and accessibility of the district.”

The latest information from the Public Security Police Force shows that an average of over 150,000 descended on the city since the first day of the month – up 7.4 per cent.

Total visitation for the first seven days numbered 1.05 million.

Those coming from mainland China experienced a year-on-year surge of 7.8 per cent – at nearly 880,000, or a daily average of 126,000.

Those who came in from neighbouring Hong Kong were about 16,000 a day, down 5 per cent from a year earlier.

Shuttle Bus Rerouting

Wong urged the government to come up with a systematic approach for the district’s long-term development.

Before its materialisation, he proposed several measures, including a rerouting of shuttle services to the northern neighbourhood, which he said currently lacks sufficient hotel accommodation and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.

Moreover, he asked for more project pairings that would allow multiple festive and IP campaigns to synchronise to generate greater synergy.
