Macau will launch a MOP500 million (USD60 million) citywide consumption campaign on Monday, aimed at stimulating spending and supporting small businesses during the off-peak tourist season.
Running until the end of November, the three-month initiative also marks the upcoming 15th National Games, to be jointly hosted for the first time by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, the government announced on Sunday.
Officially titled “National Games Cohesion, Community Consumption Awards”, it is the fourth such scheme introduced by the authorities to boost economic activity after Covid, and is co-organised with the Macau Chamber of Commerce.

Macau residents are again encouraged to dig deeper into their wallets next month under another government-backed campaign to drive domestic spending.
Discounts and deals worth as much as MOP485 million (US$60.1 million) are set to go into circulation.
Moreover, each senior citizen will be gifted a total discount of up to MOP500 for the whole campaign period– up from MOP300 previously.
The city’s physically or mentally challenged will also be entitled to the same discount as the elderly, with the limit also capped at MOP500.
However, no resident will be allowed to claim both offers at the same time, as these two benefits are mutually exclusive.
For this part, as much as MOP75 million has been earmarked.
Speaking of a budgetary rise of 65 per cent from last time’s, Yau Yun Wah, director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, shared at a press conference on Friday that the last campaign ‘effectively spurred revenue growth’.
‘Especially in low season, our previous campaigns served to stabilise the domestic economy,’ he added. ‘Some shops — amid the ongoing spending shifts — remain financially strained. They need time to adapt to new changes’.
‘An increased investment will enliven the vibes of certain neighbourhoods and improve business conditions there,’ Yau further illustrated.
The whole campaign, whish also seeks to mark the forthcoming National Games, will last a total of 13 weeks – until 30 November.
Those who spend on weekdays will enter into a draw for vouchers redeemable at weekends, with their face values ranging from MOP10 to MOP200.
The previous campaign ended at the beginning of June, with around 20,000 shops joining the initiative.
During this campaign, a total of MOP290 million in electronic vouchers were issued, with 86.2 per cent redeemed.
This move drove around MOP1.04 billion in domestic spending.
Yau Yun Wah, director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, shared at a press conference on Friday that daily spending rose 21 per cent on average during the months-long campaign.
In addition, he told reporters that the majority of the 1,800 questionnaires collected by the government post-campaign produced good reviews, saying the initiative ‘helped attract a return of cross-border spending and stimulate new consumption’.
