Think tank calls on government to launch more measures to support SMEs

The Macau SAR Government must introduce stronger measures to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) amid rising operational costs and the reduction of financial aid, a local think tank said on Thursday.
A representative of the Centre for Collective Wisdom Policy, issued the call during a press conference presenting a research report on the challenges faced by SMEs, as reported by public broadcaster TDM. He highlighted that soaring business expenses and the gradual phasing out of pandemic-era support measures have left many SMEs struggling.
Another major concern is the shift in tourist spending habits, which has made online promotion increasingly important. However, high advertising costs and delayed returns make digital marketing a difficult option for smaller businesses, they noted.
To address these issues, he suggested that Macau take a cue from Mainland China by offering direct subsidies to stimulate consumer spending and ease financial pressure on SMEs.
The report underscores growing concerns over Macau’s post-pandemic economic recovery, particularly for local businesses facing tighter margins and shifting market demands.
