353,000 weekly visas issued for Zhuhai residents travelling to Macau
Mainland Chinese authorities issued a total of 353,000 visas in the first nine months of 2025 for Zhuhai residents to make weekly visits to Macau, underscoring efforts to deepen integration between the two sides and bolster the city’s tourism recovery, the Chinese National Immigration Administration said on Thursday.
The remarks were made during a press conference, where officials highlighted a significant uptick in mainland tourist flows to both Macau and Hong Kong this year, according to China News Service.
In addition, around 29,000 multiple-entry visas were granted to mainland tourists with household registration or residence permits in Hengqin, allowing for more frequent travel to Macau, the state news agency reported.
“More and more mainland residents are opting for ‘multiple-entry’ and ‘one trip per week’ permits [to visit Macau],” the National Immigration Administration was quoted as saying.
The visa policy changes, implemented in 2025, marked a departure from previous regulations under which Zhuhai residents could only apply for a Macau visa once every two months.
As a result of the new measures, the number of mainland residents travelling to Macau rose 24.4 percent year-on-year, reaching a daily average of 56,000 in the first nine months of the year, according to mainland authorities.
Nonetheless, Macau’s government data shows a slightly different picture. The number of mainland Chinese visitors reached 19.59 million in the first eight months of 2025, a year-on-year increase of 18.9 percent, or a daily average of 79,955. The reason for the discrepancy between the two datasets remains unclear.
Boost tourism
“The increase in mainland Chinese visitation to Hong Kong and Macau has further boosted confidence in the local tourism markets, driving growth in hotel stays, dining, and retail consumption,” the National Immigration Administration said on Thursday.
“According to relevant departments in Hong Kong and Macau, hotel occupancy rates exceeded 90 percent during holidays, while revenue in the retail and food and beverage sectors rose by over 20 percent,” it added.
Looking ahead, Chinese authorities pledged to continue enhancing immigration policy and services to support regional development.
“We will continue to advance innovation in immigration management and services to further promote people-to-people exchanges and deeper integration between the mainland and Hong Kong and Macau, supporting the two regions in better aligning with the country’s overall development strategy,” the National Immigration Administration added.
