The Macau government has launched a MOP 295 million (US$36.86 million) initiative aimed at stimulating consumer activity during the post-Lunar New Year lull, a traditionally slow period for small businesses.

Announced on Saturday, the campaign allows residents to earn up to three chances to win vouchers valued between MOP 10 and MOP 200 when they make their first electronic payment of at least MOP 50 on weekdays.

The vouchers can be redeemed at participating businesses the following weekend and must be used by Monday. Consumers can combine multiple vouchers in a single purchase as long as their total spending is at least three times the face value of the vouchers.

According to Yau Yun Wah, director of the Economic and Technological Development Bureau, the programme—running from 24 March to 1 June—is projected to drive approximately MOP 1.1 billion in spending.

Economy and Finance Secretary Tai Kin Ip has revealed that the government is preparing a short-term measure to promote community consumption.

In spite of a lack of specifics, this new programme is expected to be an optimised version of the previous citywide consumption initiative.

The revelation by the secretary was in response to lawmaker Ip Sio Kai’s inquiry about the continuation of the programme and its potential extension to other industries during a Legislative Assembly Q&A session.

The secretary noted that, “considering the latest developments in both global and local economies, as well as the evolving consumption landscape in Macau, the government’s team is working on short-term measures to boost community consumption.”

The previous initiative, which concluded in December last year, managed to generate economic activity among small and medium-sized businesses.
