ab25 A  survey revealed that 82% of respondents reported spending more time in the northern district thanks to the ongoing “Flora Fête with Sanrio Characters” campaign, while 75% indicated an increase in their spending in the area, according to the Economic and Technological Development Bureau (DSEDT). Porto interior

larming closure rate of shops in the district,

abr25 T he  Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District President Wong Kin Chong has acknowledged the alarming closure rate of shops in the district, including the once-popular Atlantic Seafood & Dim Sum Restaurant in Iao Hon, warning that without significant changes, the business environment there is likely to deteriorate further. In an interview with the Times at his office, Wong expressed concerns about the less-than-ideal business environment in the northern district, highlighting that “there has been almost no change in the past 20 years.” He noted that local businesses are worried about their future, as the district remains old and lacks innovation. Despite a significant increase in tourists to Macau, averaging 136,000 daily over the past three-day Ching Ming holiday in mainland China, the northern district only sees about a 10% increase in visitor arrivals, resulting in minimal business growth of about 5–10%. He admitted that most shops in the area...

Northern district businesses struggle despite increased holiday visitors

abr25 M acau welcomed 409,000 visitors during mainland China’s three-day Ching Ming Festival holiday, a 14.7% year-on-year increase, yet small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the northern district still faced sluggish business despite the support from the two ongoing “Flora Fête with Sanrio Characters” and the “2025 Community Consumption Grand Prize” campaigns. Reviving the community economy has been a key focus for the government in recent years, particularly in local neighborhoods like the northern district, where weekend patronage has been notably low. To address this, the government has coordinated with local trade associations, including the Industry and Commerce Association of Macau Northern District, to organize various campaigns, including last year’s 20-week “Weekend Consumer Rewards in Northern District” and the ongoing “Flora Fête with Sanrio Characters” events. These initiatives aim to encourage residents and visitors alike to explore the district more thorough...
